Being busy doesn't just make you tired; for older adults with mild brain fog, unpredictable busyness actually causes them to make mistakes in daily tasks. Executive functioning is a set of higher-order processes that help us execute purposeful and goal-directed actions in our daily lives.
Because these skills are needed for successful daily living, traditional tests are often used to predict how well people manage their own lives. Instead of looking for a single perfect test, the authors propose a model where daily performance depends on an interplay between cognition and context.
This model suggests that some environmental factors hurt daily tasks directly, but only for individuals who have specific cognitive weaknesses. Previous research showed that high life complexity hurt medication management, but only for participants whose executive function scores were in the bottom twenty-two percent.
However, past studies measured complexity only once, leaving it unclear if day-to-day fluctuations in busyness were the real problem. This study aimed to see if variability in daily busyness would be more harmful than just the average level of busyness. They also tested if overall executive function levels would moderate the impact of busyness on daily functioning.
Table 1 presents the descriptive statistics for a sample of older adults, detailing their age, education, and performance on various cognitive and daily functioning measures. The authors report that participants averaged 69.33 years old with a mean DRS-2 scaled score of 11.60, indicating the baseline characteristics of this high-functioning group.
Crucially, the table highlights that while the average DALIES total score was 72.75, the accuracy component averaged only 40.25 out of a possible range, suggesting that even mild executive function weaknesses can lead to errors in independent living tasks. To measure daily functioning, participants completed realistic tasks like paying bills, shopping, and managing passwords six days a week for three weeks.
Scoring looked at both timeliness, meaning completing the task within a specific window, and accuracy based on task complexity. Every evening, participants rated how busy they felt compared to their typical day using a slider scale from zero to one hundred. The researchers calculated both the average level of busyness and the standard deviation to capture day-to-day variability.
Daily executive function was measured using a Stroop task involving color words and a backward digit span task. Scores from these tasks were standardized and averaged to create a single composite score representing overall daily executive function. This table presents hierarchical linear regressions predicting the DAILIES score, which measures independent living and executive skills.
The authors first entered age, education, and sex as covariates in step one, followed by EMA-EF in step two. In Model 1, adding Busy-Mean significantly increased the variance explained to point three-one-four, whereas adding Busy-SD did not contribute further.
Conversely, in Model 2, entering Busy-SD first showed no significant effect before Busy-Mean was added. This table presents two regression models predicting the DAILIES score, which measures independent living skills. In both analyses, executive functioning and average busyness remain significant predictors of performance.
The second model introduces an interaction term between executive functioning and variability in busyness, which proves statistically significant. This addition increases the explained variance from .352 to .418, suggesting that how consistently busy a person is matters differently depending on their executive function levels.
Taken together, the results suggest that high variability in busyness interferes with completing tasks correctly, but only for those with lower executive function. Conversely, high average levels of busyness were associated with fewer tasks being completed on time across all participants regardless of their cognitive status.
Unlike previous studies that focused on the sheer number of activities, this study found that deviations from routine were particularly detrimental for older adults. This supports the idea that older adults with executive function weaknesses benefit significantly from establishing a stable daily routine.
These findings provide support for the model that executive function interacts with contextual factors to predict daily performance. Clinically, this means doctors could interpret intermediate test scores as a risk for lapses under specific stressful circumstances rather than just general impairment.
The study reveals that while constant busyness slows everyone down, only those with weaker executive function struggle to complete tasks correctly when their daily routine fluctuates wildly.
